How to Read Your Water Meter Before Calling
Reading the meter helps answer the two most common questions: “Did I really use this much?” and “Do I have a leak?”
Locate the meter
It is generally near the curb in front of the home or business, inside a meter pit with a cast iron lid marked “water.”
Remove the lid carefully
If transmitter wires are attached, gently lay the lid back without stretching the wires. Replace the lid securely when finished.
Read left to right
Basic meters read like an odometer. There may be six numbered dials plus a stationary zero.
Watch leak indicator
A small red triangle may turn when water is flowing. Digital meters may show a dripping faucet image if a leak is detected.
Track daily usage
Record a reading at the beginning and end of the day. The difference is the day’s water use.
Leak Check and Leak Adjustment Rules
Turn water off first
Make sure no water is running: faucets, toilets, ice maker, water softener, dishwasher and outside fixtures.
Check leak indicator
If the triangle turns or a dripping faucet displays when no water is used, you may have a leak.
30-minute test
If you suspect a leak, write down the reading, wait about 30 minutes with no water use, then check again.
House vs service line
Turn off the main valve to the house. If the meter stops, leak may be in the house. If it keeps moving, leak may be between meter and house.
Toilet dye test
Add food dye to the toilet tank and wait about 10 minutes. Color in the bowl means the toilet is leaking.
Repair quickly
Consolidated Water says the leak must be repaired in a timely fashion to qualify for a leak adjustment.
Leak adjustment formula in plain English
The District may provide a leak adjustment credit when a leak on the customer side of the meter impacts the water bill. Staff completes the application and requests the customer’s signature. The adjustment equals one-half of the estimated leak, calculated by subtracting the average monthly bill for the previous three months from a one-month leak bill, then dividing the result by two.
